Remedial Massage is a tricky industry because there are varying interpretations of what a remedial massage treatment should entail. Our Clients are sometimes surprised at how different the way we perform remedial massage is, compared to treatments they have received at other clinics.
To make sure that you get what you expect from your Remedial Massage or Myotherapy session at No More Knots we want you be to clear on what we do and what our treatments involve.
1. ASSESSMENT
Every Remedial Massage or Myotherapy appointment at No More Knots involves a physical assessment. Not only is this required by our Associations and your Private Health Funds but it ensures that we know how best we can help. It allows us to identify range of movements that need improvement and how best to change your pain and/or tightness.
2. CHAT
To ensure that we can get enough information to tailor our treatment specific to you and maximise the time spent treating you, we may ask you additional questions on the table. We will also check in about the level of pressure from time to time to make sure your appointment is meeting your expectations. If you want complete silence in your massage, we probably aren’t the right remedial massage clinic for you.
3. A PLAN
Whenever you are on the table with one of our Remedial Massage or Myotherapy team your therapists is working based on a treatment plan that they have created after their assessment. They know which areas they want and need to get to, how long it should take to treat a particular area, how to ensure that they cover all the areas that you have asked for as well as the areas they know need treatment to ensure you get results. Sometimes there may be too many areas to cover thoroughly in a session and it might require follow up appointment. Other times your remedial massage therapist will ask you to come back for follow up appointments to because they know it will take more than one appointment to help you feel better and fulfil their treatment plan. They also want to see how your pain or tightness has changed based on their treatment and continue to reinforce what they have achieved in the initial appointment.
4. A VARIETY OF TECHNIQUES
Based on our treatment plan we will select a variety of different treatment techniques that we know work best for your condition, type of pain and/or tightness. We do take into consideration the type of treatment you want as well as what we know needs to occur to get fast results. We usually have more than one way of addressing the same area, so if you aren't comfortable with a particular technique just let us know and we'll figure out another way to get the same results!
Your remedial massage might involve:
- Trigger point work,
- Deep tissue massage (within your pain tolerance)
- Joint mobilisation,
- Assisted stretching or active release techniques
- Dry Needling or Cupping
- and/ or taping
5. MOVEMENT
Some people don't realise that sometimes the best way to get to an area of your body is by lying you on your back or on your side. Please know that your remedial massage therapist or myotherapist may ask you to move from lying on your front to another position or two. They might get you to shuffle towards one side of the table to help get into an area more effectively. Remedial massage therapists have even been known to get you to drop a leg off the side of the table and get you to move it, as they treat your quads because this may be the most effective and efficient way to get you results.
6. SELF CARE RECOMMENDATIONS
Often your remedial massage or myotherapist will recommend stretches or exercises during or at the end of your session. The idea behind these is that often treatment alone is not enough to get you long lasting results. Particularly when a strength deficit in an area is part of the reason for your pain or tightness. We know that the more proactive you are with your exercises and self care the less we need to see you!
7. EMPOWERMENT!
It is our belief that the more you understand your body and how it works the quicker you can usually identify when something is not quite right or what to do to change your pain or tightness, without seeing us. This is another reason why we recommend stretches and exercises at the end of a massage or myotherapy appointment. It is also a reason we might try to share our knowledge with you throughout your treatment.
Our type of remedial massage may differ to what you are used to at other remedial massage clinics across Brisbane. Our goal is to get you results as quickly as possible and get you back to doing the things you enjoy.
