What made you start Barefoot Physio?
To be completely honest Barefoot Physiotherapy was born out of frustration. I had been working as a physio for 5 years and couldn’t find a clinic that I both wanted to work at (one that fully supported it’s staff and had a true leader) and one that I wanted to go to as a client (professional, friendly, incredible at what they do with that bit of spark of something different – I had been able to find it in cafes, hairdressers and other businesses so that’s where I looked for inspiration). So I created it. It soon became apparent that clients wanted what I had to offer and it grew from there.
What does your Barefoot Physio Treatment Plan involve?
We created the Barefoot Physiotherapy Treatment Plan so that all the team (physios, client, rest of health team, friends and family) could understand where we were up to with someone’s treatment as well as creating a system that consistently delivered results. We use a systematic approach and all our physios are trained in the same way so that all clients can be shared (2 brains and 4 eyes are always better!). We have 4 weeks intensive training before a physio starts and then significant amount of ongoing training every week to be up-to-date and on the cutting edge of Physiotherapy assessment and treatment. Our Plan doesn’t restrict us it keeps us on a path. All of our trainings and treatment methods (learned from people all over the world) fit into it.
A mainstay of the plan is our nerve testing and treatment. We then test the whole body and solve for the underlying cause. And treat it, teach you how to take care of it and learn the movement cues to take care of yourself long term.
We have heard that you have an exciting new concept coming to Barefoot called the Wellbeing Battery - Can you give away any hints?
Ah well you have some good spidey senses – we are just about to start our second trial of the Wellbeing Battery.
It is based on the Wellbeing Battery Framework that I presented at the Barefoot Wellness Summits in 2017 and 2018 (we got a good deal of feedback that everyone wanted to hear more and see more from it so a great deal of work has been done).
It is based on my theory that on any given day we have a 'battery life' anywhere from 1-100%. There are things that use or drain our battery and there are things that recharge and nourish us. Understanding this can have a profound effect on the way we live, love and learn.
In Trial one the participants monitored their energy levels with stickers on calendars – we were testing the concept and whether people can monitor. We sent surveys at month 1, 2 and 3 and did visual analysis of the calendars at the end. We then ran an end user group workshop and combined all that information and data for what to test in Trial 2.
Trial 2 is testing the Wellbeing Battery Journal over 3 months (again with surveys/monitoring) and this time it includes everything that the participants from Trial 1 wanted - ways to create their levels, ways to create their strategies and more information on the concept… And a way to make it easier to travel with.
